Hello Again!

It’s Sab, your Fun English Teacher, here again.

We’re back to intermediate level in this lesson, and this is a classic grammar point: talking about the future with the words when and if. It’s not so easy – you have to be careful!

A lot of people think that when you are talking about the future, like tomorrow or next week, you should use a future form like I will see you tomorrow or I will call you next week.

Problem! You do say I will call you next week but you don’t say I’ll call you next week when I will arrive!

You do say If you pass your exams I’ll take you on holiday, but you don’t say I’ll take you on holiday if you will pass your exams…

This Fun English Lesson teaches you what is good English and what is not. The examples are very clear and there are lots of exercises to help you understand everything, of course.

Have fun with this important lesson and get in touch in the Fun English Students Group and tell us if you did well. If you leave a message I’ll say hello, ok?!

Happy grammar!

2) Explanation & Examples

a) We can use when and if to talk about the future. We often put the present simple verb after when and if .

β€˜We’ll give you your password when you arrive.’

β€˜I’ll go to the dentist if the pain gets worse.’

b) when and if can go in the middle of a sentence…

β€˜I want to be a fireman when I grow up.’

β€˜I’ll give you a chocolate if you give me a kiss!’

or at the beginning:

β€˜When I grow up, I want to be a fireman.’

β€˜IfΒ you give me a kiss, I’ll give you a chocolate!’

β€˜I’ll call you as soon as I have the results.’

β€˜Should I close all the windows after I arrive?’

β€˜I’ll keep the heating on until you arrive.’
